The King Alfonso VI of León has gathered his loyal knights to get to Tolomera del Rey and finish the nightmare using the power of the Witch’s tears.īanish the zombies and demons that entered the Kingdom of Castile with Don Ramiro, the loyal King’s Knight, and his friends. Retro can be good, but in healthy moderation.Maldita Castilla EX - Cursed Castile The tears of a young witch have been turned by a demon into a key that opens up a gateway for the evil in this world. All these annoying issues are probably there because the game aimed too extremely for a retro feel. Additionally, although there are frequent enough checkpoints, leaving the game and coming back to play forces to restart from the very beginning of a chapter. To reach the last levels it is also mandatory to find a few items scattered through the game, a daunting task considering that it is impossible to revisit a previously visited level without starting over. Cursed Castilla is brutally hard, so not many people will be able to achieve that feat. However, after losing four continues the good ending seems disabled. There are lives and continues, but thankfully they are infinite. While this was often the case in the 80s, since then platformers are much more fluid in the way the character should handle. Jumps are stiff with too little air control. For the rest, the game goes really deep in its retro roots. The quality of life improvements end here. Other weapons can be found in chests, and the game kindly leaves the choice of which to pick (just wait for the icon to change). In consequence, every attack has to be deliberate otherwise an enemy can slip through and touch the player. The base weapon consists of two thrown swords, meaning that it is not possible to throw new swords as long as the previous two have not hit a target or left the screen. Cursed Castilla is intended to be a retro action platformer very similar to Ghosts n Goblins, albeit a bit updated. I wouldn’t call it a clone per se, but clearly Locomalito played a lot of Capcom arcade games, and IMO this game is even better than its inspiration. “Cursed Castilla” AKA “Maldita Castilla EX” is basically a reimagining of Capcom’s “Ghosts n”Goblins,” albeit with its own flavor and twists. In fact, you owe it to yourself to go to his site and download a bunch of games - Hydorah is especially great IMO if you enjoy Gradius style SHMUPs. All of his games ooze authenticity, and look, sound and play like games from the heyday of the 80’s and 90’s arcade era.
